Day 38 - Atherton to Gordonvale - 57km
I was winding through farmland, the fog was low. I stopped at Gillies roadhouse and got a big breakfast and milkshake, got to load up on protein.
I came to the Gillies ranges the start of the descent down, 19km of winding roads hugging the range. Luckily roadworks just before with traffic lights was a huge help, forcing cars to come down in waves.
I waited for the last car and rolled down through beautiful rainforest engulfing the road, winding down and down. Stopping every now and then to let the next group of cars to go through. My brakes got a good workout as I passed creeks and drop offs. I stopped at Heales Lookout, looking down to the road below in the valley, I still had a long way down to go.
As I finally made it out the other end, I was relieved, I was full of adrenaline from the steep decent, the hypervigilant state I was in, checking for cars or worse trucks, could come to an end.
I came into Gordonvale and the rest area there, like everywhere surrounded by beautiful mountains. The Bruce hwy runs parralel and the local trucks enjoy beeping their horns into the night as they pass.
Tomorrow I'll be in Cairns.
