Day 48 - Townsville to Giru - 85km
Ben's route was great, cutting through, farms, backroads, over a small creek crossing, lovely views and virtually no traffic.
I came to a river and the route said to cross, no bridge, I searched the banks for a spot to cross, to no avail, the shallowest spot still would be up to my waist and following the river it goes straight to the sea so there could be Saltwater crocs and probably had freshwater crocs. I sat on the bank and had something to eat thinking I could use my inflatable mattress to ferry my things across. I decided this was a stupid idea and to cut my losses and turn back.
The headed up to Giru a small town with a sugar mill but more importantly a bridge over the Haughton River. They have a free camp-site in town and I setup for the night, a few grey nomads already there. I watched the steam rise from the sugar mill and the occasional train passing by.
I'll get back to the track tomorrow.
